One of the most brutal serial killers in British criminal history was Oladimeji K. Akinmurele, better known as the Cul-de-Sac Killer. He was born in Nigeria on 16 March 1978. As his mother was from the Isle of Man, Akinmurele grew up there. Even at a young age, he showed signs of violence and cruelty that deeply shocked those around him. Whilst his schoolmates were still playing with dolls, Akinmurele is said to have already been torturing and killing animals. These early signs of sadism and a lack of compassion were to develop into a veritable nightmare in the years that followed. Akinmurele went off the rails at an early age. He served short prison sentences for theft offences at a young age. But at the age of 17, he committed his first murder. His victims were always elderly people, whom he strangled in their homes; to cover his tracks, he then set fire to the flats. As all the murders took place on quiet suburban streets, he was nicknamed the ‘Dead-End Killer’. Between 1995 and 1998, he murdered a total of five elderly people. The murders gave him a ‘thrill’, as he later confessed during police questioning following his arrest on 1 November 1998. The police had caught on to him because he had left his fingerprints on the murder weapon used to kill the Boardmans. Until his arrest, Akinmurele – who was just 20 years old and harboured an extreme hatred of elderly people – had been living with his girlfriend, Amanda Fitch, in Ballasalla on the Isle of Man. During the trial, Akinmurele made a shocking confession, admitting to the five murders, which he had committed out of pure greed. Throughout the trial, Akinmurele showed no remorse or sense of guilt. He spoke coolly and dispassionately about his actions, which he justified with his greed for money and possessions. For the victims’ relatives, this was a veritable ordeal. Psychologists who assessed Akinmurele described him as narcissistic, manipulative and a man without a conscience. He regarded himself as superior and saw other people merely as a means to an end. His penchant for cruelty and his lack of compassion were said to be typical characteristics of a psychopath. Even before the trial began, Akinmurele committed suicide on 28 August 1999, aged 21, whilst on remand at Manchester Prison. He was found hanged in a separate wing of the prison. To this day, Akinmurele’s actions demonstrate just how fragile the line between good and evil can be, and how important it is to recognise signs of violence and cruelty at an early stage and to counteract them. The Akinmurele case serves as a reminder to remain vigilant and to foster empathy within our society in order to prevent such tragedies in the future, if that is at all possible.
