A horrific crime took place on 24 October 2014, which made headlines around the world. On that day, young Chelsea Bruck disappeared from a Halloween party in Frenchtown Township, Michigan. It was only after a six-month search, during which more than 1 million leaflets were distributed, that Chelsea’s decomposing, naked body was found by construction workers in a wooded area near railway tracks in Ash Township, about 12 miles from the party venue. Her clothes were discovered not far from the crime scene on a derelict industrial site in Flat Rock. The post-mortem revealed that Chelsea had died from blunt force trauma to the head and had sustained various fractures to her face, neck, jaw and teeth. Forensic officers collected DNA evidence from the leggings Bruck was wearing. In July 2016, the forensic laboratory confirmed a match. This led to Daniel Clay. Daniel Clay was a young man from Newport with a long criminal record who immediately confessed during questioning. Like Chelsea, Daniel Clay had attended Michael Williams’ Halloween party, where 600 revellers were celebrating wildly. Chelsea, who worked as a waitress at Olga’s Kitchen restaurant in Frenchtown Township, had made herself a costume of the ‘Batman’ villain Poison Ivy especially for the party and had brought along a wine bottle labelled ‘Poison’ as a matching accessory. She had come to the party with her friend Rebecca Brinson and just wanted to have some fun. As Rebecca had injured her nose and had been drinking vodka, Chelsea looked for a lift home and found one with 26-year-old Daniel Clay, who picked her up at the side of the road after she left the party. Chelsea had no idea that she was getting into the car with her murderer. Daniel Clay was arrested on 22 July 2016 at his girlfriend Kelli Richter’s mobile home park in Frenchtown Villa. He was 27 years old at the time of his arrest. Clay’s girlfriend, Kelli Richter, told the Free Press that he had confessed to the crime to her in a phone call the following day. During police questioning, Clay admitted that he was involved in Bruck’s death. However, he claimed it had been an accident. Daniel claimed to have had consensual, rough sex with Chelsea in the car. She asked him to slap her and choke her. Then, suddenly, she stopped breathing. Daniel stated that he had attempted CPR. But it was too late. He then drove around the area for 40 minutes before disposing of Chelsea’s body under a tree stump in a wooded area. This version of events was contradicted by the fact that Chelsea had not died from suffocation, but from blunt force trauma to the skull. Furthermore, the question arose as to why her blood was found on her clothing if she had, in fact, been suffocated. Clay was initially charged with second-degree manslaughter. He was later also charged with concealing a body. His murder charge was eventually upgraded to ‘public murder’, which allowed the jury to consider a charge of first-degree premeditated murder, carrying a mandatory life sentence. It was the DNA found on part of Chelsea’s Halloween costume that led investigators to link Clay to Bruck’s death. On the day of his arrest, Clay rang his ex-girlfriend and the mother of his child, Jessica Pridyl. He told her that he was “extremely sad”, that he had “screwed up big time” and that he would be “gone for a very long time”. On 16 May, a jury found Clay guilty of murder with intent. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole on 13 July. This is little consolation for Chelsea’s family, who have lost a young woman who was never able to fulfil her dreams.
