A man sees red

A common motive for murder is jealousy, which can affect anyone, regardless of their intelligence, age, or social background. One person who was so plagued by jealousy that he wiped out an entire family was 26-year-old Andreas E. The young man was a trained bricklayer who, at the age of 19, got together with 14-year-old Nadine H., who lived with her parents and brother in a detached house at Walsenbachweg 44 in the legendary ski resort of Kitzbühel. Andreas was warmly welcomed into the family, which became a kind of second home for him. Nadine’s brother Kevin became one of his best friends. But over the course of five years, the relationship between Andreas and Nadine fizzled out. Andreas, who preferred to chill on the sofa or tinker with his old Chevrolet SUV after work on the construction site, became too boring for Nadine, who had meanwhile successfully completed an apprenticeship as a businesswoman. Despite relationship problems, the young couple moved into the granny flat in Nadine’s parents’ house in May 2019. But two months later, Nadine broke up with Andreas, whose world fell apart. He had lost not only his girlfriend, but also his second family. Andreas was desperate to win Nadine back, but she was already in a new relationship with 24-year-old ice hockey goalkeeper Florian J. Three months after the breakup, Andreas arranged to meet Nadine’s brother Kevin on a Saturday evening to go out on the town. Of all places, they ran into Nadine and her new boyfriend Florian at the Londoner nightclub. An argument ensued, whereupon Nadine left the club with Florian and they both drove to her apartment in her parents’ house. Andreas, who felt humiliated, drove to Nadine’s parents’ house at around 4 a.m. on October 6, 2019, while under the influence of alcohol, where her enraged father gave him a harsh rebuff. Nadine and Kevin also verbally abused Andreas. He got into his car and drove home. Once there, he packed his brother’s Walther PPQ 9 mm pistol with two full magazines and an additional 20 rounds of ammunition, as well as a knife and a baseball bat. He then drove to Nadine’s house. When her father opened the door at around 5:30 a.m., Andreas saw red. He shot him, then Kevin, then Nadine’s mother, then Nadine, and finally her new boyfriend Florian. After Andreas’ bloody rampage, he drove to the Kitzbühel police station and confessed to the five murders. Andreas E. was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Innsbruck Regional Court on August 12, 2020, his last words in the trial being, “I am infinitely sorry.”
