The disappearance of a 19-year-old actress named Tamara Teodorowitsch made headlines at the end of May 1959, with wild theories ranging from kidnapping to secret service involvement. Tamar Teodorowitsch was born on March 12, 1940, in Lithuania’s capital Vilnius, the daughter of doctor Maria-Nadescha Teodorowitsch. At the time of her disappearance, she was training to be an office clerk. But her passion was acting. Her biggest dream was to be a movie star on the big screen. This dream suddenly seemed within reach when she was hotly tipped for the lead role in the film adaptation of the novel “Doctor of Stalingrad” by bestselling author Heinz G. Konsalik. But shortly before filming began, the producer decided to cast another actress. Shortly afterwards, all traces of Tamara Teodorowitsch disappeared. She seemed to have vanished into thin air. She was last seen on May 29, 1959, at Odeonsplatz in Munich, where she got into an Opel Kapitän. Her mother, Maria-Nadescha Teodorowitsch, reported her missing to the Munich police on May 30. She could not explain the sudden disappearance of her daughter, who loved spending time in Schwabing’s dance halls. The police searched intensively for the missing young woman. But after a week, the mother’s worst fears came true. Her daughter was found dead on June 6, 1959, at the Wittelsbacherbrücke bridge over the Isar River. The police began their investigation, which led to the Russian secret service, the KGB, as Tamara Teodorowitsch had trained at the Institute for Research on the USSR. Had she fallen victim to the secret service? But the autopsy revealed something completely different. Tamara Teodorowitsch had drowned, and without any external signs of violence. She had been unable to cope with the fact that her big dream of an acting career had burst like a soap bubble. So on May 29, she jumped from the Wittelsbach Bridge to end her life. For, as Confucius wisely remarked, “Those who steal our dreams give us death.”
