A series of brutal murders in which women were raped and killed shocked the Frankfurt am Main region in the 1980s. The first murder took place on June 14, 1980, involving 14-year-old schoolgirl Regina Barthel from Dietzenbach, who was walking in the woods when a man who had been lying in wait for her dragged her into a spruce plantation on Patershäuserweg near Heusenstamm, where he brutally raped and then stabbed her to death. Four months later, on October 21, 1980, prostitute Annedore Ligeika was found dead in her apartment. She had been raped and strangled with her pillowcase. The next murder took place on February 7, 1981, when prostitute Fatima Sonnenberg was raped and then stabbed to death in her apartment in Frankfurt am Main. More than a year passed before 17-year-old Regina Spielmann was raped and stabbed to death on May 9, 1982, in the same forest as Regina Barthel. The police were completely in the dark as to who the brutal rapist and murderer was. Eighteen months passed before the killer struck again. On November 26, 1983, 22-year-old Simone Newin was raped and strangled with her sweatpants while jogging in the woods. The investigation was in full swing, as five women had been murdered in three years. But who was the brutal serial killer who murdered in a sex frenzy? At first, the police were completely in the dark about this question. Then chance came to the police’s aid. On November 29, 1983, a man had attempted to rape a 19-year-old woman from Frankfurt who was on her way home from work. However, he was overpowered by a group of city employees. They called the police, who arrested the attacker. The attacker was 25-year-old electrician Michael Wolpert from Neu-Isenburg. He had already been fined for causing a public nuisance in 1979 and 1982. On March 5, 1984, the father of a daughter confessed to raping and murdering the five women in a sexual frenzy. Although he was linked to other murders in the region, these could not be conclusively proven. In 1985, Michael Wolpert was sentenced to life imprisonment for five counts of murder. This brought an end to the gruesome series of murders and the region around Frankfurt am Main could finally breathe a sigh of relief.
