Between June 1984 and November 1985, a series of murders took place in and around London involving boys who had been sexually abused by several men before being strangled to death. Who was behind this pedophile gang that drugged young boys, raped them, and then killed them in cold blood? This question remained unanswered for a long time until November 1985, when another boy’s body was found in a field in Essex. The dead boy was 14-year-old Jason Swift, who, according to forensic scientists, had been sexually abused by several men while under the influence of drugs and then suffocated. The trail led to a council flat in Kingshead Estate in Hackney, which belonged to a man named Sidney Cooke, also known as “Hissing Sid.” During the subsequent search of the flat, it became clear that the flat was the scene of the crime where the heinous crime against Jason Swift had taken place. Sidney Cooke had received £5 each from his friends Leslie Patrick Bailey, better known as Catweazle, Steven Barrel, and Robert Oliver so that they could gang rape Jason Swift. He was considered the initiator of the pedophile circle, which, like convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, maintained a ring for the sexual exploitation of minors. Sidney Cooke worked at fairs, where he quickly came into contact with boys whom he sexually abused. Among his proven victims were two teenage brothers who had spent much of their childhood in a foster home. They were easy prey for Sidney Cooke. After meeting them at a fairground, they traveled across the country with him, where they were repeatedly sexually abused by him and other men. On May 12, 1989, Sidney Cooke was sentenced to 19 years in Wandsworth Prison at the Old Bailey for the manslaughter of Jason Swift. Since all the men had accused each other of Jason Swift’s death, they were convicted of manslaughter. While Sidney Cooke was still in prison, his friend Leslie Patrick Bailey, who was also incarcerated, accused him of being involved in the murder of 7-year-old Mark Tildesley. Tildesley had been missing since June 1, 1984. According to Leslie, Sidney had lured him from the fairground to his caravan with the promise of a 50 pence bag of sweets. There, the boy was given drugs so that he, Sidney, and a man named Lennie Smith could rape him. Mark’s body was never found. Only Leslie Patrick Bailey, the only one of the three who had confessed to the crime against Mark, was charged with it, as the Crown Prosecution Service refused to prosecute Cooke and Smith for the murder of Mark Tildesley in 1991 due to lack of evidence. Both vehemently denied having anything to do with the boy’s death. Leslie Patrick Bailey also accused Sidney Cooke of being involved in the murder of 6-year-old Barry Lewis. Sidney had abducted him while he was playing with friends in Walworth on September 15, 1985. His body was discovered in Essex in April 1986. He had been drugged, raped multiple times, and strangled. However, Bailey was the only one convicted of Barry Lewis’ murder. Sidney Cooke, who according to Bailey was the leader of the pedophile ring, could not be proven to have been involved in the crime. Leslie Bailey was murdered in his prison cell by two other inmates in October 1993. Sidney Cooke was released on parole in April 1998. However, after the documentary series “Dispatches” featured Sidney Cooke’s crimes on October 29, 1998, the police reopened their investigation into Cooke and arrested him again on January 26, 1999. Three days later, he was charged with 18 sexual offenses, and on December 17, 1999, Cooke was sentenced to two life sentences at Wolverhampton Crown Court. In prison, Sidney Cooke repeatedly bragged about his pedophile ring, which is believed to have raped and killed at least 17 boys. A fellow inmate named Ian Grabb was hired by the police to spy on Sidney Cooke. Operation Orchid was launched to investigate murders that could be linked to the pedophile ring. Child molester Sidney Cooke, now 96 years old and one of the oldest prisoners in the UK, remains in prison to this day because, despite his advanced age, he still poses a high risk of seriously harming children. There is justice in this world after all.
