One of Germany’s most bizarre criminal cases, which is still considered a classic in criminal law today, is known as “The Cat King.” It tells the story of how a person can be manipulated solely through psychological pressure to the point where they are willing to commit murder. The main characters in this gripping criminal case were three people who became entangled in a fateful web of relationships. In 1986, police officer Michael R. struck up a conversation with the couple Barbara H. and Peter P. while having an after-work beer at a pub in the Sauerland region. This conversation marked the beginning of a tragic connection that ultimately culminated in an attempted murder. Michael R. was an unstable individual who was all too eager to listen to Barbara’s tales about the Cat King. For centuries, this figure had embodied evil, whose goal was to destroy humanity. To prevent this from happening, Barbara and Peter claimed that a human sacrifice had to be made to the Cat King. This sacrifice was to be none other than Annemarie N., the new wife of Barbara’s former partner, Udo N. Anyone with common sense would have dismissed this as nonsense or a conspiracy theory, but not Michael. He was under the spell of Barbara and Peter, who had him completely under their control through a form of brainwashing. They convinced him that only he could save humanity from the Cat King by killing Annemarie. Michael truly believed in the Cat King’s existence, which is why, on July 30, 1986, he went to Annemarie’s flower shop, where he stabbed her eight times with a pocket knife that Peter had given him. Passersby rushed to Annemarie’s aid; she survived despite her serious injuries. Since the Cat King’s wrath failed to materialize and none of the psychopathic couple’s prophecies came true, Michael broke his silence. This led to the central question in court: who was actually the true perpetrator? After protracted proceedings at the Bochum Regional Court, an appeal hearing before the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe, and a retrial, Barbara H. received a 14-year prison sentence instead of life imprisonment. Her partner also received an 11-year sentence instead of life imprisonment. Both had been the masterminds behind the attempted murder of Annemarie N. Michael R. had diminished responsibility due to delusional blindness, which is why he was sentenced to 8 years in prison. This brought an end to one of Germany’s most unusual criminal cases.
