During the cold nights at the end of 2002, as the New Year celebrations were approaching, something inconceivable happened. The murder of Simone Dewenter, then aged 30, a sex worker from Cologne-Kalk, shook the region and has left a deep trail of unresolved questions and unsolved mysteries to this day. Simone, affectionately known as ‘Simi’, was deaf and, despite her disability, had fought her way through life with remarkable strength and determination. She worked as a street prostitute in Bonn and Cologne, communicating through lip-reading, sign language or small notes. Simi could also speak a little, which made communication easier, but it did not make her any less vulnerable. On the evening of 29 December 2002, Simone was in her car in a parking bay in front of a Deutsche Telekom building on the street ‘Am Propsthof’ in Bonn-Endenich. Eyewitnesses reported that, at around 9.20 pm, she got into another car, a white van. What happened next remains a mystery and is still shrouded in uncertainty to this day. On New Year’s Day, 1 January 2003, Simone Dewenter’s body was discovered. Her body, clad only in underwear, was found near a small car park near Schweich in the district of Trier-Saarburg, around 150 kilometres from Bonn. Her clothes and other belongings were never found, which presented investigators with a major mystery. How could a young woman vanish without a trace and then be so brutally murdered? The police launched an investigation immediately, but despite intensive efforts, the inquiry yielded no results. The case quickly attracted media attention and kept the public on tenterhooks for years. On 8 January 2004, an episode of “Aktenzeichen XY … ungelöst” was devoted to the mysterious death of Simone Dewenter. The programme reached millions of viewers and led to numerous tips, but none provided the decisive breakthrough. More than eight years after the crime, newspapers and television programmes continued to report on the case. In particular, the programme “Ungeklärte Morde” on RTL II revisited it time and again, in the hope that the truth would eventually come to light. Simone Dewenter’s fate left no one unmoved – her story was like a dark fairy tale that had become deeply etched into people’s memories. A renewed wave of interest swept over the case in 2025. The murder was featured once again as the third documentary in the programme “Aktenzeichen XY Cold Cases”. On 5 March of that year, the events surrounding Simone’s final evening were revisited in detail. By 6 March, a total of 34 tips had been received from viewers, which now had to be investigated by the police. Hope of finally finding the murderer had been rekindled. Simone Dewenter was more than just a headline or an unsolvable case. She was a woman with dreams, hopes and an eventful life. Her story reminds us that behind every crime lies a human destiny that must not be forgotten. Even though the darkness of the crime still hangs over her final hours, the quest for justice remains alive. The convoluted circumstances of her death, the questions that remain unanswered to this day and the police’s tenacious investigations run like a common thread through the story of this horrific murder. It serves as a stark reminder that evil is often closer than one might think – hidden in the shadows of the night, waiting for the next moment of weakness or inattention. The Simone Dewenter murder case remains an open wound in Germany’s criminal history. Every new lead, every small step forward in the investigation gives the bereaved and all those fighting for justice a glimmer of hope. Perhaps one day the truth will come to light, and the dark veil shrouding this case will be lifted. Until then, all we have left is the memory of a brave woman whose life ended far too soon and far too cruelly.
